  • TruWest Credit Union is sponsoring a school supply drive and giveaway hosted by Community Bridges Inc.—the drive runs through June and leads to an event on Saturday, July 26 at the Interstake Center in Mesa. The event will provide backpacks filled with supplies, free laptops, and health services to K-12 students.  Mesa Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • Randy and Chad Miller pleaded guilty on May 28 in a New York courtroom to securities fraud and aggravated identity theft for forging documents to sell Legacy Park—a youth sports project in east Mesa that went bankrupt and was renamed Arizona Athletic Grounds; they face sentencing on August 26 and must pay more than $12 million in fines.  The Arizona Republic
  • Maricopa County Sheriff's Office is investigating the homicides of two teens — 18-year-old Pandora Kjolsrud and a 17-year-old — who were found dead on May 27 after deputies responded to a call off State Route 87 between Mesa and Payson.  12 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State officials declared bird flu outbreaks at two egg farms in Maricopa County an animal disease emergency, and egg industry experts warned that egg shortages and higher prices will affect local consumers in the coming weeks—Mesa shoppers should expect supply disruptions until fresh shipments arrive—.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maricopa County officials said 9,734 people were without homes on January 28, showing a 3% rise from last year's count. They said the increase, which reverses a 17% drop in 2024, comes as high rent costs push more individuals into places not meant for living — with cities like Mesa reporting higher numbers — and funding for housing programs will be adjusted.  12 News

  • Vertuccio Farms in Mesa hosts the final weekend of Sunflower Days—a celebration of Arizona’s sunflowers with family-friendly activities, attractions, and snacks.
