CRIME NEWS

  • A 35-year-old Mesa man accused of setting a Tesla Cybertruck on fire and causing explosions at a service center on Southern Avenue and Sossaman Road was held in custody by a federal judge on Thursday because his alleged actions posed a risk, with his trial on five federal arson charges set for July 1 (he reportedly used fire starter logs).  12 News
  • William Owen Hines, 19, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the deadly attack on Preston Lord at a Halloween party in Queen Creek and will be sentenced today at 1:00 p.m. in Maricopa County Superior Court with a possible term of 10.5 to 21 years—he apologized to Lord's family.  12 News

  • Marisa Manheim, an assistant professor, said Arizona communities are testing the use of recycled wastewater for drinking water by hosting tasting events—this method aims to ease the 'yuck' reaction—and secure water supplies over time.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Katie Hobbs visited an MVD office in the West Valley on Thursday to get her Real ID and remind Arizonans that they must have a compliant ID by May 7 to fly—she noted that other federally accepted forms like passports remain valid for air travel.  KJZZ
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation will host an expo at the Mesa Convention Center on May 20 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help small businesses learn about and compete for federal-funded transportation contracts — representatives from ADOT and local agencies will offer sessions and networking opportunities.  Mesa Independent

  • A nonprofit is holding a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m. near Velda Rose United Methodist Church to mark the site for an 84-bed medical respite center for people facing homelessness—planned to be open by 2026.  Mesa Independent
