  • A study released Dec. 30 shows Arizona residents ranked 43rd overall in generosity and 49th in donations, with volunteer rates at 31st compared with states like Wyoming and Utah.  KJZZ
  • AAA reminds partygoers to plan ahead for safe rides during tonight's New Year's celebrations. The organization advises using alternatives like Lyft or Waymo and suggests avoiding long, tiring drives to reduce accident risks.  KJZZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Arizona Wineries in Mesa is seeking a new series 13 farm winery license after Mesa City Council voted unanimously (on Dec. 8) to recommend the proposal.  Mesa Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Mesa Public Schools board approved a $500,000 contract increase on Dec. 11 to support architect and engineering services for rising building renewal projects. The 5-0 vote raised the multi-vendor contract from $1.2 million to $1.7 million.  Mesa Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa residents may purchase fireworks until Jan. 3 and set them off until Jan. 4 between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. and on Jan. 1 from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., following city rules that allow ground devices and fountains while banning high-flying displays (illegal use incurs fines and jail).  Mesa Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • CDC data shows a severe flu surge; last week, over 19,000 hospitalizations were reported, compared to 10,000 fewer the previous week, as a new subclade K of influenza AH3N2 spreads. Mesa residents are urged to consult healthcare providers about vaccination and other precautions.  KJZZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald was named a top-15 finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 by the team on Tuesday. The vote will narrow the list to seven candidates, with players needing 80 percent approval for induction.  12 News
