BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Mesa Design Review Board discussed landscape plans for a nearly 2,600-square-foot expansion of the Mint Dispensary facility on East Southern Avenue on November 18—board members Paul Johnson and Denise Dunlop were absent. Staff Planner Charlotte Bridges said the site is zoned light industrial and allows marijuana use with required setbacks, with access from both Southern Avenue and Wilbur.  Mesa Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bristyn McKinney, a sixth-grader at Legacy Traditional School - East Mesa, won a $529 check for her essay in the AZ529 Essay Contest. The award money will be deposited into an AZ529 savings plan (to support her future college studies) as she shared her dream of becoming a nurse like her parents.  Mesa Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dylan Skalina, a 13-year-old with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Type 1 diabetes who collapsed while trick-or-treating and later died at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, is remembered for his kind and selfless nature. His family holds a memorial service today at Scottsdale’s New Covenant Lutheran Church—his donated organs have already helped patients in need.  East Valley Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Centennial stunned Mesa 41-39 in a 6A playoff quarterfinal on November 21 at Deer Valley High School when twin brothers Titus and Torrin Hill connected on a last-minute play that set up a game-winning field goal. The victory moved Centennial into the semifinals while Mesa’s season ended after a dramatic comeback fell short.  Mesa Independent
  • Liberty defeated Red Mountain 48 to 23 in the Open Division quarterfinal at Mountain Ridge after early turnovers set the tone for a dominating performance. The Lions will face Basha in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov.29 at Corona del Sol High School—two weeks of preparation helped spark the win.  Mesa Independent
