CULTURE NEWS

  • KJZZ’s The Show presented a spooky roundup of Halloween stories that featured party goers dressing up with a twist and artists turning old wood into gothic keepsakes — experts also discussed cemetery history and live haunt performances. The report included local accounts of eerie ghost encounters and chilling experiences that marked the holiday.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Schools has approved expanding two junior high campuses for high school students due to declining enrollment and parent requests for smaller classes. Shepherd College Preparatory will enroll ninth graders at Shepherd Junior High while Franklin High School will enroll ninth and possibly tenth graders at Brimhall Junior High starting next school year.  KJZZ
  • Researchers from Arizona studied the interstellar comet 3I-ATLAS and learned it is made mostly of ice and carbon dioxide. The comet is now behind the sun and will be visible to backyard observers in December before fading next year — its analysis may help improve models of how solar systems form.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mesa Leadership Training and Development Program selected 23 members from local businesses, city departments, and nonprofits for its Class of 2026. The 10-month program began on August 1 and will graduate the participants on May 1, 2026—adding them to a network of over 900 Mesa Leadership alumni.  Mesa Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yomy Castillo from the Arizona Department of Health Services’ Injury Prevention said children walking on Halloween are three times more likely to be fatally hit by vehicles than on any other day. Castillo urged parents to teach kids to stop at corners and to use face paint instead of masks that block their view — a simple step to help reduce accidents today.  KJZZ

  • Chain restaurants are offering Halloween deals today — Chipotle offers a $6 Boorito for Rewards members in costume and Krispy Kreme gives a free doughnut for those dressed up while other chains such as Qdoba, Moe's, Sonic, Shake Shack, Red Robin, Outback Steakhouse, Burger King, and Papa John's present special offers.
