- ➤ Seniors and families from Mesa and nearby communities are invited to attend the Mesa Senior Expo, which will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 14 at Mesa Market Place Swap Meet’s Building No. 4 at 10550 E. Baseline Road. The event will feature health screenings, free sample giveaways, and door prize drawings, and organizers are seeking local vendors and sponsors (free parking and free admission are provided). - ➤ Mesa Public Library is launching Mesa Reads Together, the city's first community-wide reading event that will offer free copies of The Midnight Library and host book discussions and creative workshops. The initiative will run from November 1 through December 15 — it aims to help Mesa reach 15 million minutes read in 2025. Mesa Now
- ➤ Mesa Community College will host its annual Empty Bowls events in November where for a $10 donation each guest gets a unique ceramic bowl and a meal of soup and bread—local artists will also feature their ceramics in a silent auction to benefit the Paz de Cristo Community Center. The events will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Nov. 5 at the Saguaro Building on the Red Mountain Campus and on Nov. 12 at the Kirk Student Center on the Southern and Dobson Campus, while MCC’s on-campus food pantry collects donations for students in need. - ➤ Fall Forward—Fashion Back is a fashion show that will combine Y2K style with today’s fall trends in a partnership among Macy’s, Chandler Gilbert Community College and D2—Homes for the Homeless. The event will feature new designs and support the local community. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Steve Cline from east Mesa works as a funeral and cemetery pre-planner by day and creates educational TikTok videos featuring countryball animations to teach viewers about international relations and world cuisines—his videos blend humor with learning. Mesa Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Arizona's Department of Education has launched a four-year, state-funded pilot program that allows high school graduates to work as paid teacher's assistants while taking night and weekend college classes—participants earn $20 per hour and gain mentorship from full-time teachers to help ease the 15% educator vacancy rate. The program is currently available in a few districts and is expected to expand statewide. 12 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mesa officials approved an agreement with Hadrian on October 20th to reimburse the company $750 for each Mesa resident hired full time for one year—an arrangement that will pay up to $75,000 over five years and requires 300 new jobs with a minimum salary of $71,000. An independent analysis estimates that the 100 local employees could add about $9.7 million in direct income over the next five years. 12 News

- ➤ Federal Title X staff were laid off amid the ongoing government shutdown—yet Affirm said family planning services for low-income Arizonans have not been disrupted, with funding secured until April 1. The organization will await Congress’s decision on future support once the shutdown ends. KJZZ
