COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mesa Community College and the Arizona Marching Band Association will host the inaugural Thunderbird Marching Classic on Oct. 18th from 3:30 to 10 p.m. at John D. Riggs Stadium on MCC’s Southern and Dobson Campus—21 high school marching bands will perform and an awards ceremony will honor student talent as proceeds benefit MCC’s Summer Music Camp; general admission tickets cost $14.  Mesa Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Economists on the Finance Advisory Committee said most Arizonans are spending less as rising prices and slow wage growth curb consumer activity, which may lower sales tax revenue for state programs. Budget officials warned that reduced spending could challenge funding for schools, healthcare, and other services—trends that will shape the state budget in the coming months.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Arizona Department of Education is launching a pilot Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program that lets high school diploma and GED holders work in classrooms while earning a teaching certificate, pay, and tuition support. Up to 100 participants will be placed at local districts including Mesa Public Schools and others—45 have enrolled so far as the program works to address the teacher shortage.  The Mesa Tribune
  • A Title 9 review at Mesa Community College found that a theater professor did not engage in sex-based discrimination despite complaints from some students — including claims that he made bad comments and asked them to undress for an assignment —. He remains on leave as the college continues its personnel review.  KJZZ

  • Revel Surf will host the Revel Ruckus Full Send Festival on Oct. 24-25 in Mesa—featuring competitive surfing, skating, diving and more contests. The two-day event will include the Winch Pro Big Air Surf Contest, the Huck Dive stunt show, River League Finals and Skate Jam to offer action sports opportunities for participants and spectators.  Mesa Independent
