  • The City of Mesa is mourning longtime firefighter and engineer Paul Shupe, who passed away this week after battling brain cancer. He served for over 20 years and is remembered for his bravery — his wife Nancy and four children join colleagues in honoring his legacy.  ABC15 Arizona

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Schools' estimated enrollment fell by about 1,800 students, a 4.5% decline, to 51,663 this school year from 2024-25—officials said competition from charter schools and vouchers, lower birth rates, and families moving out of state contributed to the drop while retention rates remain near 90%.  The Mesa Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters in Mesa and other metro Phoenix cities will cast ballots on Nov. 4 on issues such as public project funding, bond proposals, and a recall where District 2 voters choose between councilmember Julie Spilsbury and Dorean Taylor. Registration ends Oct. 6, ballots are mailed on Oct. 8, and ballots must be returned by Oct. 28 — each measure will shape future local government actions.  The Arizona Republic

  • The Phoenix Mercury lost Game 1 of the WNBA Finals to the Las Vegas Aces 89-86 last Friday after leading most of the game — the team made 12 turnovers and saw its scoring drop in the second half; Coach Nate Tibbets said they must fix these errors if they win Game 4 today in Phoenix to reach the Finals.  KJZZ
