COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The city of Mesa’s bicycle and pedestrian program staff will lead a smart cycling class for older adults on Oct. 22nd at the Main Library, 64 E. First St. The class runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and each person will get a free bicycle safety kit — including a helmet, bicycle lights — while supplies last.  Mesa Independent
  • Mesa-based nonprofit Save The Family Foundation is collecting Halloween costumes at its Mesa headquarters until Oct. 10—300 costumes will be distributed at a family event on Oct. 22.  Mesa Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DoorDash launched its red autonomous delivery vehicle Dot on Sept. 30 in Mesa and Tempe to deliver items like toothpaste using local bike lanes, sidewalks and roads. Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman said the program helps lower traffic congestion and reduce emissions—promising a cleaner, more efficient delivery service.  The Arizona Republic

CRIME NEWS

  • A Florida man, Adam Jones, has been indicted on felony theft and fraud charges for allegedly using false information to get ESA funds by listing fake children — his indictment says he took less than $25,000.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa’s Falcon Field Airport was awarded federal grants through the FAA to fund design work for a new taxiway and runway holding apron, as well as for reconstructing the West Airport Service Road and a taxiway connector—these projects will begin in November and finish by spring to boost safety and efficiency at the airfield, which currently hosts over 800 aircraft.  Mesa Independent
  • The Mesa City Council is set to vote on a contract increase for temporary stagehand workers at the Arts and Culture Department—if approved, UTP Productions Inc.'s annual contract will rise from $975,000 to $1.1 million. The meeting begins at 5:45 p.m. Oct. 6 at 20 E. Main St.  Mesa Independent
  • Tourists from Europe and across the states encountered closed gates at Saguaro National Park East on Wednesday—park rangers flashed car lights to deter entry as the federal government shutdown began.  KJZZ
