COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mesa will host Domestic Violence Awareness Night on Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The Post, 26 N. Macdonald to honor survivors and those lost to domestic abuse—city officials and local groups will share remarks, hold a candlelight vigil, and offer support resources.  The Mesa Tribune
  • The Mesa Board of Adjustment approved permits for a 10-adult transitional community residence on McLellan Road west of Country Club Drive with a 5—0 vote on Sept. 3. The approval allows the business at 833 W. McLellan Road to be within 1,200 feet of another community residence and assisted living facility.  Mesa Independent

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Waymo halted its autonomous vehicle operations on Friday when floodwaters caused some cars to get stuck and passengers to be stranded—by Sunday morning the vehicles resumed running after some were towed, and officials said the sensors could not tell the water depth.  12 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Arizona Restaurant Association closed a successful fall Arizona Restaurant Week and noted that natural gas helps Mesa restaurants cook food and keep costs low. Southwest Gas has served the area since 1957—providing safe, reliable energy that boosts business growth.  Mesa Independent
  • DoorDash said its small red delivery robot Dot—about the size of a baby stroller and able to carry six large pizzas—made hundreds of successful deliveries in Tempe and Mesa, and will soon expand its service throughout the Phoenix metro region if the trial runs smoothly.  KJZZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Mesa kicked off its tree planting season on Sept. 30 at 11:15 a.m. to expand the urban tree canopy and cool neighborhoods; upcoming events on Oct. 3, Oct. 4, Oct. 25, and Nov. 8—will offer workshops and large-scale planting opportunities for residents and businesses.  Mesa Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State experts say it will take years to see the full effect of the federal bill on Medicaid in Arizona as new work and reporting rules roll out in 2027; some warn the cuts might make thousands lose health coverage and force rural hospitals to cut services—savings and costs remain unclear.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • The USDA warned Mesa shoppers that certain precooked pasta meals from Trader Joe’s and Walmart may be linked to a listeria outbreak that has killed four and sickened at least 20 people—customers are advised to immediately discard any affected products. The products, with use-by dates from late September to early October, have been removed from shelves while officials continue their investigation.  KJZZ
