- ➤ Canadian-based XNRGY Climate Systems announced on Sept. 17th that it will expand its Mesa headquarters by opening a 330,000-square-foot facility along Pecos Road and 80th Street. The new facility will produce AI-enabled air-cooled chillers and create 500 jobs — boosting the company's local workforce. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ AT&T will host a hiring event on Oct.2 from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. at 1355 W. University Drive in Mesa to fill hundreds of full-time hybrid call center sales representative positions that require 3 to 4 days in-office work and 1 to 2 days working from home, and candidates can apply online before the event. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Maricopa County Community College District finalized its plan to expand its bachelor’s programs from 7 offered in 2023 to about 25 by 2031. New degrees will be launched annually starting in 2027—helping fill job needs and serving nearly 8,000 students. KJZZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scattered thunderstorms are expected across the Valley Saturday and Sunday after heavy rain on Friday brought flash flood warnings and delayed drivers on local roads—especially in the East Valley where strong storms with possible hail and gusty winds may create extra hazards. Forecasts show the storms will ease later in the weekend with temperatures near 90 on Saturday and 89 on Sunday. KJZZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mesa issued a total of 241 commercial building permits in July—one such permit was for tenant improvements at a grocery store located on 5941 E. McKellips Road issued July 29 by Septon Development Group LLC. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Arizona lawmakers passed SB 1247 that raised the tobacco purchase age to 21 to meet federal law requirements; the law took effect Friday and makes it a petty offense for retailers to sell tobacco to those under 21 while exempting active military (a largely symbolic provision). KJZZ
- ➤ The Arizona Department of Transportation said that alternate-fuel vehicle drivers in the Phoenix metro area will lose HOV lane privileges on Oct. 1 if Congress does not extend the federal law—solo occupants caught in these lanes will face fines of at least $400, and nearly 160,000 vehicles carry the special plates. - ➤ The IRS told the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that families in Arizona who received 2023 state tax rebates must pay federal taxes on those payments—affecting about 750,000 people—and will not get refunds. Attorney General Kris Mayes filed suit over the issue and a hearing is set for November. KJZZ

- ➤ Maricopa County is on track to see fewer heat-related deaths than last year as Phoenix runs its 24-hour heat respite center on Jackson Street—providing a safe place from extreme temperatures—and firefighters use ice immersion bags to treat heatstroke. Officials say new cooling measures have lowered deaths by about 20% this summer, though challenges like rising homelessness and expiring federal funds remain. KJZZ

- ➤ Zander Diamont, co-founder of Minimal Living Concepts, said that Arizona’s new law allowing casita construction has boosted interest in building accessory dwelling units—very few of these projects are planned for short-term rentals as most serve as guest houses, offices, or gyms. The law, which took effect last New Year’s Day, requires cities with more than 75,000 residents to permit ADUs and has encouraged families to add flexible spaces to their properties. KJZZ
