BUSINESS NEWS

  • Uber will buy 20,000 vehicles from Lucid, with production set at its Casa Grande facility—Nuro will supply the technology to power the robotaxis, a move that is expected to boost the region’s autonomous vehicle market and create jobs.  KJZZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arizona Museum of Natural History will host Rock on the Rock—its annual after-hours fundraiser—on Sept. 27 at 6—9 p.m. at 53 N. Macdonald in Mesa—guests will enjoy live music, dancing, signature cocktails and mocktails, light bites and exclusive museum programming while proceeds support new exhibits and ongoing education programs.  Mesa Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Library has named Marc Mason as the new Writer in Residence who will work at Red Mountain Library from October through December. He will offer one-on-one consultations on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. and run workshops on Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 at 635 N. Power Road—helping local writers build their skills.  Mesa Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Sept. 22 meeting, the Mesa City Council voted 5-2 to approve a rezoning for Price Manor II—a proposed 41-lot development on a 6.5-acre site north of East McKellips Road and North Center Street—with council members Alicia Goforth and Rich Adams opposing the measure.  Mesa Independent
  • An East Valley mother who leads a coalition for disabled parents said lawmakers must cut the Empowerment Scholarship program so that attendant care and habilitation services for disabled children will face reductions starting Oct. 1—virtual town halls are set for Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the changes. Gov. Hobbs argued that the cuts are needed to keep essential Medicaid programs sustainable, while Senate Majority Leader Kavanagh opposed making changes to ESA funding.  12 News
  • Arizona courts approved more than 4,000 civil rights restoration requests for voting, owning a gun and serving on a jury, and Maricopa County commissioner Nick Saccone said people with old felony cases should apply now to vote in the 2026 election. Applications at the Superior Court law library come with a packet that explains which offenses delay full rights—read the instructions carefully to complete the forms.  KJZZ
  • Starting Oct. 1, Mesa drivers with electric vehicles who ride alone will lose access to the HOV lane unless the federal rule is extended — the Arizona Department of Transportation said troopers will enforce the law based on safety and context.  12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Gov. Katie Hobbs signed an executive order that lets anyone get a COVID-19 vaccine at a pharmacy without needing a prescription—insurers are required to cover the vaccine cost. The order overcomes recent federal restrictions designed to limit access for high-risk individuals.  KJZZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona State University will test facial recognition technology for student ticketing at an October 25 game against Houston—offering fast lanes for opted-in students to scan their face instead of using a ticket or phone. The trial aims to speed up entry at Mountain America Stadium as game attendance grows.  KJZZ
