ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Mesa Fire crews helped a worker injured from a head gash after being struck while changing lights on a light pole at Hohokam Stadium at around 10 a.m. Thursday — they assisted him as he could not descend on his own.  ABC15 Arizona

CRIME NEWS

  • Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas—a 32-year-old Mexican national from Flagstaff—died on Aug 31 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa while in ICE detention at the Central Arizona Correctional Complex after his arrest for aggravated assault and other charges, and his cause of death remains under investigation.  KJZZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mesa's Office of Economic Development received a 2025 Excellence in Economic Development Gold Award from the International Economic Development Council for its Asian District Brochure—its team will be honored at the IEDC 2025 Annual Conference in Detroit from Sept. 14–17.  Mesa Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mesa City Council will meet Monday, Sept. 8, at 5:45 p.m. at 20 E. Main St. to recommend a new series 9 liquor store license for GJ Liquors LLC, located at 753 W. Broadway Road — agent Jackaran Singh will handle the application — before it is sent to the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control.  Mesa Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Will Humble, executive director of the Arizona Public Health Association, said that only people over 65 will clearly be eligible for a COVID booster this fall while state officials await the Advisory Committee's decision on extending access to others such as those with chronic conditions, and pharmacies will need standing orders to administer it—this may delay the vaccine for vulnerable groups.  KJZZ
