CRIME NEWS

  • The Mesa Police Department is seeking help locating 16-year-old Amilliyen Taylor who went missing on Sept. 1 near 80th Street and University in Mesa; he is an African-American male with brown hair, brown eyes, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 106 pounds and bearing a tattoo reading “Jazmine” above his right eye—if you have any information, call 480-644-2211.  Mesa Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents protested on Tuesday at a Kyrene board meeting to oppose a proposal to close nine schools due to falling enrollment — they said the plan relies solely on numbers without considering each school's performance and community impact, and the board will discuss the proposal again on Sept. 16 before a final vote in December.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge blocked plans to deport 700 unaccompanied Guatemalan children over the weekend and ordered that any children already removed be returned—legal advocates say the decision protects kids with active immigration cases. The Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project and other groups took legal action after learning of the planned deportations in Arizona.  KJZZ
  • Construction began on Fire Station 224 at 3441 S. 80th St. in southeast Mesa on September 3rd to meet growing emergency call needs—its $12.3 million design will house Engine 224 and include drive-thru bays, dorm rooms, and offices, with completion scheduled for fall 2026.  Mesa Now
