Good morning, Mesa. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 2nd of September.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Three experts told The Associated Press that raising your thermostat a few degrees when you’re away saves energy and money in Mesa by easing your air conditioner’s workload + reducing risks of extra wear. They explained that even a small adjustment can result in noticeable savings on cooling costs and help maintain a comfortable home temperature.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kyrene School District is considering closing nine schools due to declining enrollment that is expected to reduce funding by $7 million — parents oppose closing five east side schools because they already operate near capacity and offer valued programs. The district will not decide until December to allow time for community feedback.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal judge blocked the deportation of 53 Guatemalan children held in custody in Arizona after they were loaded onto planes, as a lawsuit was filed by the Florence Project to protect their right to safety. The children were ordered to remain in government-run facilities — while legal proceedings review their case.  KJZZ
  • Mesa is proposing rate hikes for water, wastewater, solid waste, natural gas and electricity to offset rising costs and debt — the plan includes tiered increases for different water usage levels. City council will review the proposals on Sept. 11 — if approved, the new rates take effect Jan. 1.  The Mesa Tribune
  • The Mesa City Council will meet at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8 — at 20 E. Main St. — to recommend that the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control grant a series 10 beer and wine store license for Shop Kwik & Deli, and Amarjit Singh is the agent for the application.  Mesa Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced new safety rules for high school athletes this season—fall sports athletes must finish anti-hazing and opioid plus concussion training by the end of September while winter and spring athletes must complete the courses before tryouts and credentialed media will need to pass a fingerprint check.  East Valley Tribune
