BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, most national retailers remain open for Labor Day while select services—such as the Post Office, UPS, and FedEx—are closed or have modified hours; local shoppers in Mesa should verify store and bank schedules since outlets like Costco will not operate today.  12 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Heidi Levering said her emotional support dog, Buddah, was fatally shot by a Mesa officer on Aug. 15 at an apartment complex on Broadway Road near Oliver—during a domestic-violence call the dog charged while off-leash and in his vest, leading the officer to fire three times, and internal affairs is investigating the incident.  The Mesa Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Game and Fish Department advised Mesa campers and hikers to secure food away from tents—bears have a strong sense of smell—and to set up campsites away from water sources to reduce bear encounters this holiday weekend. The department stressed that keeping food out of tents and away from creeks and rivers will help prevent bears from being attracted by human food.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office relaunched its mugshot website and it drew attention from attorneys who fought the earlier version—now planning a class action lawsuit. MCSO claimed the relaunch complies with an appellate court opinion while the attorneys argued the page punishes individuals.  KJZZ
  • Mesa issued 122 commercial building permits in June, including one on June 2 for converting 21 parking spaces to eight electric vehicle charging spots at 1710 S. Greenfield Road—this is based on the city’s current records.  Mesa Independent
