CRIME NEWS

  • Mesa — Mark Jacobo, father of 18-year-old Stephen who was fatally shot at a party in November, said he will push for a trial after learning that prosecutors may offer a plea deal letting suspect Joe Rim face only up to 29 years while the case remains pending.  12 News
  • A 38-year-old Mesa man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a domestic violence case that killed his pregnant girlfriend—he received a 19-year prison sentence after police found her deceased during a 2021 incident in their home.  12 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Elizabeth Purtell, an eighth-grade civics teacher from Heritage Academy in Mesa, is one of 10 finalists for the Bill of Rights Institute’s National Civics Teacher of the Year Award for the 2025-26 school year — each finalist earns a $1,000 prize and the overall winner will get an extra $5,000 when announced in September.  Mesa Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept. 3, the Mesa Board of Adjustment will meet at 4:30 p.m. for a study session and at 5:30 p.m. to vote on permits for comprehensive sign plans for three Del Taco sites in Mesa — the session is in the lower council chambers at 57 E. First St.  Mesa Independent
  • City offices in Mesa will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 in observance of Labor Day — solid waste collection will remain unchanged, transit will operate on a Sunday schedule, and libraries, recreation centers and museums will be closed while parks and Dobson Ranch Golf Course stay open.  Mesa Independent

  • A massive dust storm on Monday increased health risks for homeless people and older adults as doctors at Valleywise Health saw more coughs, shortness of breath and eye irritation—warning that valley fever cases might also rise.  KJZZ

  • The Sun Devils' home opener sold out for the first time since 1998 and will take place today at 7 p.m. at Mountain America Stadium — the game matches ASU against the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks.  KJZZ
