- ➤ At a meeting Monday, Aug. 25, Mesa City Council met at 20 E. Main St. to discuss a series 12 restaurant license for El Pacifico Mexican Food, which serves lunch and dinner, and they will recommend it to the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control for Best Tacos LLC — located at 1712 W. Broadway Road Suite 108-114 with agent Theresa June Morse. Mesa Independent
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A towering wall of dust hit metro Phoenix on Monday, leaving about 39,000 people without power and grounding flights at the airport—strong winds and downed trees slowed traffic in parts of Maricopa County. KJZZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Mesa City Council approved a rezoning for the planned Beverly Apartments at 120 N. Beverly during the August 18 meeting, voting 5-2 with Councilmember Rich Adams and Mayor Mark Freeman voting no. The three-story, 36-unit project will move forward as the city takes next steps in development. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Mesa Gateway Library was under construction along Ray Road and Eastmark Parkway on Aug. 19 — it is set to become the city's first full-size library in 35 years. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ The Anti-Defamation League reported that Arizona had 122 antisemitic incidents in 2024—a drop from 163 in 2023. The report said the state should set up a taskforce to fight hate as divisive rhetoric and social media posts fuel the problem. KJZZ
- ➤ The City of Mesa will do street maintenance on Ellsworth Road between Ray Road and Elliot Road until September 15, so drivers can expect delays during off-peak hours and should use detour routes via Signal Butte or Sossaman. The work will restrict one lane at a time—starting August 28 and ending September 15—while crews phase the repairs. Mesa Now
