- ➤ Mesa police chased a 37-year-old man who threatened with a knife at an apartment complex and fled in a blue truck before running across U.S. 60 — witnesses reported he reached for his waistband — prompting an officer to shoot him; he was taken to hospital and is expected to survive with no injuries to officers or bystanders. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ A Mesa police officer shot a 37-year-old man Sunday afternoon on August 10th on US 60 near Alma School Road after he ran from a pursuit sparked by knife threats at an apartment complex—he received medical aid, underwent surgery, and is expected to survive. Mesa Independent

- ➤ On Aug. 6, the Mesa Board of Adjustment approved a variance to reduce the interior side yard setback for a four-unit apartment building damaged by fire at 2012 N. Olive in Mesa. City staff explained that a normally required 30-foot setback was reduced to a 17-foot, 1-inch setback (the board vote was 5-0). Mesa Independent
- ➤ Salt River Project workers—known as zanjeros—start their early shifts to unlock canal gates, check flow meters and drive long distances to keep water flowing to farms, homes and businesses in the Valley. - ➤ Mesa City Council will consider a new series 10 beer and wine store license for Main Market, a Mesa convenience store, at its meeting scheduled at 5:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 at 20 E. Main St.—the recommendation is for RK Gas Station LLC with agent Jared Michael Repinski. Mesa Independent

- ➤ Researchers at UA found that mothers living in resource-poor neighborhoods were 20% more likely to develop gestational diabetes mellitus based on a review of over 480,000 births in 15 counties from 2014 to 2020—assistant professor Melissa Furlong said the study may inform improved screening and policies during pregnancy.
