CRIME NEWS

  • Mesa police are asking for help to find 71 year old Quenett Scott who went missing at 5 p.m. Aug. 8 near McDowell Road and Val Vista Drive while wearing a long sleeve green top, white pants and white shoes, and who is a black female with black hair, brown eyes, stands 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds—call Mesa police at 480-644-2211 if you have any information.  Mesa Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Developer Cole Cannon opened Cannon Beach last December—featuring a 2-acre surf lagoon and skate park—and has attracted unique local tenants such as It’s Boba Time while planning to add hotels, retail shops and more on the 37-acre site at Power and Warner roads. He expects the development to boost Mesa’s economy by up to $643 million over 20 years as visitor numbers rise.  The Mesa Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Mesa Board of Adjustment approved a variance to allow a 6-foot wall around a home’s pool at 3747 E. Kael St. following a 4-1 vote on Aug. 6 — boardmember Gerson Barrera dissented while two members were absent.  Mesa Independent
  • Senate President Warren Petersen is calling for a federal investigation into Senator Analise Ortiz after she posted ICE raid locations online – he said her actions might break federal law. Ortiz said her First Amendment rights protect her postings and accused Petersen of using his office as a political tool.  12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Sheharyar Ali at HonorHealth Heart Care — East Mesa explained that new studies show as little as 2,300 to 4,000 steps a day can improve heart health, noting that the 10,000-step goal began as a marketing idea. He urges people who feel discouraged by the higher number to remember that any movement counts toward a healthier heart.  Mesa Independent
