CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old Mesa father, Arnold Barney, faces a first-degree murder charge after his six-week-old son died from severe head trauma following six open-handed slaps intended to stop his crying—Barney apologized during his initial court appearance and is held on a $1 million secured bond at Maricopa County Jail.  12 News
  • Officers responded to a Mesa home near Loop 101 and Baseline Road just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and found 60-year-old Angela Ciura and 55-year-old Robert Braun dead from gunshot wounds—investigators believe the case is a possible murder-suicide and note that the victims were divorced.  ABC15 Arizona

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brianna Mullen of Mesa earned a spot on the 2025 spring dean’s list at the University of North Dakota—an honor for students in the top 15%—joining over 1,600 students recognized for outstanding academic performance. She met the requirement of completing at least 12 graded semester hours—showing her dedication to her studies—in the spring term.  Mesa Independent
