- ➤ The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter No. 2560 is hosting a Christmas in July online auction from July 1 until 6 p.m. on July 31 to raise funds for Wreaths Across America Remembrance Day on Dec. 13—auction bids will help secure 200 additional wreaths for placement at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park and Mountain View Cemetery. - ➤ The estate of Tempe High School math teacher Nasser Chidiac, who died last December in a wrong-way crash, has filed a claim seeking $10 million from the City of Mesa—blaming poorly maintained roadway design and inadequate signage near Power Road on SR202 for his fatal injuries, with the city given 60 days to respond. - ➤ A 61-year-old Mesa pastor was arrested on July 23 on a $200,000 bond and is accused of sexually abusing a 16-year-old church member who met him to grieve her brother’s death (court documents state he made unwanted advances and asked for nude photos) as he stepped down from his church role. The Arizona Republic
- ➤ Mesa Police are searching for two missing teen girls from Saturday, July 26, as a 13-year-old was last seen at 11:30 p.m. near Signal Butte and Broadway in a grey t-shirt and sweat pants while a 17-year-old with a pierced nose was seen at 10:30 p.m. near Higley Road and Southern Avenue, and anyone with information is asked to call (480-644-2211). - ➤ On July 27, MCSO deputies shot and killed an unidentified man armed with a knife near the 9860 E. Broadway Road apartment complex in Mesa—he reportedly made suicidal statements before he advanced on officers despite commands to drop the weapon. Mesa Independent
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Federal funding cuts have eliminated some HIV education and prevention grants and reduced CDC funds, which may hurt Arizona's efforts to cut new HIV infections by 2030. Maricopa County — which gets more than $12 million from the Ryan White Program — warned that fewer federal resources will mean fewer services for people living with HIV. KJZZ
