CULTURE NEWS

  • A Mesa business named Tyrannostorus will host a Roman coin prep class on Sunday, Aug 10, at 1 p.m. where participants aged 10 and older will learn to clean and preserve genuine ancient coins—each participant receiving four coins dating back 1,800 years—using provided tools and expert guidance.  Mesa Independent
  • Concerns over censorship grew after former Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum chief curator Tiffany Fairall left her post when she was asked to remove art from her shows. A Scottsdale museum also altered a touring exhibit’s title and content, raising questions about funding pressures affecting creative expression.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 7th, Dorean Taylor spoke at a Mesa City Council meeting — he announced his plan to challenge councilmember Julie Spilsbury following a recall petition in the upcoming November recall election.  The Arizona Republic
  • The Mesa Planning and Zoning Board approved a site plan modification for a 45,000 square foot industrial development during its July 23 public hearing — the board voted 7 to 0 — and the project now moves to the next phase.  Mesa Independent
  • Gov. Hobbs said Interior Secretary Doug Burgum committed to an independent review of the federal response to the Dragon Bravo Fire — which began on July 4th after a lightning strike and destroyed dozens of structures along the North Rim including the historic Grand Canyon Lodge — and both officials agreed to work together to rebuild affected communities as crews continue battling the fire near the Grand Canyon.  KJZZ
