  • Arizona Animal Welfare League, the state’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, will bring adoptable kittens to PetSmart in Phoenix on Saturday, July 26 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. — the event celebrates National Adoption Week and gives Mesa pet lovers a chance to save a life — with adoption support available on site.  Mesa Independent
  • The Summit at Sunland Springs will host its annual first-responders thank you breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 6 at 2415 S. Signal Butte Road in Mesa, welcoming police, fire, EMT and medical personnel—donors may email Ginger Thomson to contribute $25 gift cards for direct support.  Mesa Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were sentenced to multi-year prison terms for trafficking methamphetamine after a long investigation by the Attorney General's Office, with Michael Koontz receiving 8.25 years, Jerome Francisco Borsch 9.25 years and Holly Rochelle Dagnino 6 years on charges including conspiracy and dangerous drug possession.  12 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Arizona Department of Education employs 12 purchase review specialists to monitor its voucher program & rising enrollment from 11,000 to over 85,000 students is expected to push spending to nearly $1 billion next school year & state officials warn that the lack of new budget funding could strain the program’s oversight.  KJZZ

  • The Law Library Resource Center will hold a free legal clinic on July 29 at the Mesa Public Library—64 E. First St.—from 9 to 11 a.m. where staff will help with court forms in English and Spanish but will not offer legal advice.  Mesa Independent
  • City officials have extended the public swimming hours at five City pools past July 19—Mesa, Stapley, and Brimhall Aquatic Complexes now operate daily except Sundays through July 26 while Skyline and Rhodes Aquatic Centers are open daily through July 27 and on weekends until Aug. 31.  Mesa Now
  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes urged the federal government to fix power outages at the San Carlos Irrigation Project that left over 13,000 customers in rural and tribal areas without reliable electricity. She said funds and engineering studies have not yet fixed the old system amid dangerous summer heat + more immediate action is needed to protect customers.  KJZZ
  • Arizona cybersecurity chief Ryan Murray said that days after the U.S. bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites in June, hackers targeted the Secretary of State's website by replacing candidate photos with a red-and-black image of Ayatollah Khomeini — the site was restored within hours and authorities are reviewing records to learn more about the attack.  12 News
