Good morning, Mesa.

Construction superintendent Blake Hurlbert was shot and killed on July 7 in a Mesa Home Depot parking lot, and 27-year-old Mario Mazon Montes is accused of second-degree murder after reportedly firing when Hurlbert approached his car—he was known for helping people in recovery and leaves behind a grieving wife, two young daughters, and a supportive community.

On July 11, just after 5 p.m., Mesa officers responded to reports of gunshots near 350 East 5th Avenue and shot a 30-year-old man armed with a handgun who did not follow clear commands—he was taken into custody and treated for gunshot wounds in stable condition with no officers injured.

Mesa Design Review Board officials will discuss the look and landscaping of a planned 48,000-square-foot warehouse for The Nox music venue at its July meeting — further project details and next steps are yet to be finalized.
