- ➤ The Mesa Public Library is hosting its annual Big Book Sale on Friday and today at the Main Library (64 E. First St.) inside the Saguaro Room from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where volunteers offer donated items such as cookbooks, fiction, children’s books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs at steep discounts with hardcover books at $1, paperbacks at 50 cents, and $10 mystery boxes. - ➤ DeAndre T. Johnson, who live-streamed his attack on a Mesa Department of Child Safety worker during a meeting on Nov. 5, 2024, was convicted of disorderly conduct, unlawful flight, and attempted first-degree murder+ he will be sentenced on Sept. 5+ while the worker was treated and then released. 12 News

- ➤ Tesla has applied to offer autonomous robotaxis in metro Phoenix—extending its ride-hailing service beyond a pilot in Austin—as ADOT began the certification process on June 26 and will decide by the end of the month. KJZZ
- ➤ A new ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals lets 3,774 No Labels Party voters run for any office they choose without needing party permission. Judge Salvador Mendoza issued the decision Friday—highlighting the state’s interest in fair candidate participation—and it sets a precedent that limits party leadership control. KJZZ
- ➤ A new Arizona law established an independent office to monitor state prisons—lawmakers did not include the funds needed to implement it. KJZZ
- ➤ The City of Mesa awarded $84,494 through the Mesa Youth Climate Action Fund to 18 community groups that will lead climate projects addressing water stewardship and heat mitigation, with all initiatives set to finish by Oct 31; the program is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies (part of the City’s Climate Action Plan).
