- ➤ Soroptimist International of the East Valley recently announced its 2025—26 Board of Directors, naming Co—Presidents Teresa McCollom and Cheri Mingst-Smith, Treasurer Kristie Blevins, Secretary Marcia Chapman and Director Ruth Abbott to guide its efforts to empower women through education. The organization has been active for over 54 years and supports mentoring and scholarship programs such as Live Your Dream Awards and Dream It Be It. Mesa Independent
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Mesa police said a man was fatally shot during an altercation outside The Home Depot (near Dobson Road and Rio Salado Parkway) around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, and authorities arrested a man who was charged with second-degree murder as the investigation continues. ABC15 Arizona

- ➤ Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox will perform at Mesa Arts Center on Friday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. at the Ikeda Theater at 1 E. Main St.—the show will mix modern songs with classic pop styles and tickets start at $46. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Dropout Kings will hold a memorial concert for late singer Adam Ramey on Sunday, July 13 at 5:30 p.m. at the historic Nile Theatre (admission is $24) where guest bands including Escape the Fate and Scary Kids Scaring Kids will perform to celebrate his life. The Arizona Republic

- ➤ Kelly and Stanton sent a letter last week to the U.S. Department of Education asking that $118 million be released for Arizona schools because many districts expected the funds on July 1. Mesa Public Schools are losing $4.2 million for student support staff and the Boys and Girls Club may lose $1.3 million for programs—steps that could force cuts and layoffs as schools plan for the new term. - ➤ Arizona asked a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed on behalf of 7,000 alleged Medicaid fraud victims who claim that fake sober living homes cost the state billions; state officials argued that legal precedent and recent policy changes protect Arizona from liability.
