GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona House of Representatives passed a bipartisan $17.6 billion budget deal that provides $92 million for public safety—$119 million for transportation and $281 million for K-12 education—just four days before the deadline. The budget now moves to the Senate for a final vote before it goes to Governor Katie Hobbs.  12 News
  • Mesa City Council will review a series 12 restaurant license and liquor license request for Pacos Tacos at a meeting scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, July 1 at 20 E. Main St.—officials will decide whether to approve the application.  Mesa Independent
  • State lawmakers sent Gov. Katie Hobbs an 'ag-to-urban' bill that would let developers buy water rights from farmers to support more housing while using less water than farms. Senior researcher Kathleen Ferris warned that even though homes save water, groundwater is finite — a risk for long-term water security for current residents.  KJZZ
  • Mesa City Council heard Urban Transformation Manager Jeff McVay's presentation on proposed ASU facilities in downtown Mesa on June 26 — council members will review the proposal soon to decide next steps.  Mesa Independent
  • A Senate measure that would have sold millions of acres of federal land was scaled back on June 26 when a key provision was removed, leaving Bureau of Land Management land still at risk. Conservation advocates warned that mining and border wall construction continue to threaten these public lands + called for stronger protections.  KJZZ
