Good morning, Mesa. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Bird flu has hurt many Arizona farms and led to the loss of numerous chickens, so people are now trying quail eggs and vegan substitutes for protein. Quail start laying eggs at eight weeks and produce more eggs each year—offering a fresh option as egg costs remain high. KJZZ
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The city will offer up to $6.36 million in tax reimbursements if a developer finishes 328,425 square feet of commercial space at Medina Station in East Mesa, which includes a row of five high-quality restaurants and major retail like Dick’s Sporting Goods. The incentive requires the developer to get permits within six months and open the key stores within 48 months to trigger full reimbursements—helping attract further investment to the area. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Salt River Project board approved a plan Tuesday to convert Coronado Generating Station from coal to natural gas in eastern Arizona. SRP said the plant (which powers about 150,000 homes) will complete the conversion by 2029 as it works toward net-zero carbon emissions. KJZZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Arizona Legislature passed the bipartisan ag-to-urban bill on Monday, which lets developers in metro Phoenix and Pinal County buy water rights from retiring farmers to build homes that use less water. The bill passed 35-20 after two years of negotiations with Gov. Hobbs and now will be sent to her for approval — a step aimed at increasing the housing supply while conserving water. KJZZ
