  • Mesa Animal Control urged pet owners to protect their animals during Fourth of July fireworks by keeping them indoors with the radio or TV on—ensuring pets have proper ID and are not taken to outdoor events or left in hot cars.  Mesa Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A distressed woman in her 40s or 50s was found unresponsive in a Mesa Taco Bell bathroom on Dobson Road on June 22 and Mesa Fire responded with CPR but pronounced her dead at 7:56 p.m.—the county Medical Examiner will determine her cause of death.  The Arizona Republic

  • Suspect Adam Sheafe confessed from his Coconino County jail cell that he killed Pastor Bill Schonemann in New River and planned to execute 13 priests across 10 states—he was arrested in Sedona after a high-speed chase and now awaits extradition to Maricopa County.  12 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa's bicycle & pedestrian program and Mesa Public Library have announced the third Bike to Books contest, inviting pre-kindergarten to 12th grade students to design bike-symbol art for a shared-use path. Winning designs in each grade bracket will be installed next winter & submissions are accepted through July 31 with winners announced in the fall.  Mesa Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new poll shows that 91% of Arizonans are worried about the Colorado River and 89% are troubled by unregulated groundwater, with most voters favoring state actions to boost water conservation and regulation. The survey, conducted online with 799 registered voters from June 11 to 17, indicates that concerns grow for long-term water shortages—prompting calls for decisive government measures.  KJZZ
  • Gov. Hobbs said she will veto any interim budget request from House Speaker Montenegro—an approach never before used in the state—because the Senate-approved bipartisan spending plan is set and the current budget ends July 1.  KJZZ
