EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Schools saw a slight rise to 91.29 percent attendance for the 2024-25 school year - chronic absences dropped modestly with nearly 28 percent of students missing many days - and board members stress that more steps are needed to boost student participation.  The Mesa Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Authorities reported that the Cub Fire started around 6 p.m. on June 15 near Fort McDowell and has burned about 100 acres in the Tonto National Forest. Northbound lanes on State Route 87 between mileposts 204 and 208 are closed due to a fire caused by an earlier crash, and six engines, one water tender, and about 50 personnel are working on the incident.  12 News

  • Today a procession and services are held to honor fallen Apache Junction officer Gabriel Facio (shot on June 2) who died (June 7); the event begins at 7:45 a.m. at the Apache Junction Police Department, travels along Superstition Boulevard, and reaches Central Christian Church in Mesa by 9:00 a.m. with services starting at 10 a.m. A BBQ event in honor of Facio and his family is scheduled for Wednesday at Apache Junction High School.  ABC15 Arizona
