EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Schools will pilot a new social media content creation course this fall to teach real-world skills for marketing, journalism and activism. The course, offered at Red Mountain and Mountain View high schools — including local business visits — will help students learn essential digital tools and online safety.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Executive Assistant Chief Dan Butler has been appointed as Mesa police chief and will take over on July 1—he is a 25-year veteran who previously managed daily operations and capital projects while his predecessor, Chief Ken Cost, retired after more than 30 years of service.  Mesa Independent
  • Gov. Hobbs is reviewing reports that ICE agents posed as Tucson Electric Power workers while seeking unauthorized immigrants, and she called the tactic very concerning. She said state laws on impersonation are unclear, and ICE should focus on deporting criminals + not target people who follow the law.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maricopa County reported the first heat-related death of 2025 when an unidentified older adult male died from injuries sustained during the 2024 heat season — the Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating 63 additional possible cases.  KJZZ

  • Pedal Haus Brewery will launch its seasonal Island Hopper Golden Ale— a crisp, refreshing beer with a touch of citrus flavor— on June 7th from 7:00 p.m. to midnight at its Mesa location.  Mesa Independent

  • The Phoenix Suns reportedly hired Jordan Ott as their new head coach, replacing Mike Budenholzer after a 1 1/2 month search that involved over 15 candidates—Ott is the fourth head coach in four seasons and served as an assistant with the Cavaliers.  12 News
