COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mesa WWII veteran James Peyton will turn 100 on June 6—his neighbor Dave Knoer is asking locals to send birthday cards for his milestone celebration; last July, friends and local Marines honored him by hanging an American flag outside his home.  ABC15 Arizona

CRIME NEWS

  • A Mesa mother was arrested after she told police on May 26 that she tried to kill her disabled 8-year-old son by choking him with a rosary, striking him with a rock and tile flooring, and smothering him with a trash bag at her home on Broadway Road and Center Street—she may face charges including attempted murder while the children remain in protective care.  The Arizona Republic

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Library will host its Summer Reading Program from June 1 through Aug. 1, where participants will earn points by reading at least 20 minutes each day and collect secret codes at library events to win prizes—prizes include restaurant coupons and free books while supplies last. The program will also offer art contests for bike-to-books designs and a special library card, with entries accepted until July 31.  Mesa Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Incoming City Manager Scott Butler has appointed Mesa native Lance Webb as City Engineer; Webb joined the Engineering Department in 2012 and was promoted to Assistant City Engineer in 2022, replacing Beth Huning who retired on May 22. He has led over 500 capital improvement projects totaling more than $1.4 billion—experience he will use on upcoming projects across Mesa.  Mesa Now
  • Six of seven Mesa council members approved a tentative $2.79 billion spending plan last week for the fiscal year beginning July 1 — the plan allocates $741 million for capital projects like new fire stations, a police substation and ambulances. Final budget adoption is scheduled for June 2 as debate continues over the spending increases and future cuts.  The Mesa Tribune
  • Maricopa County’s latest Point-In-Time survey (a one-day count conducted each January) showed overall homelessness increased 3% while unsheltered homelessness spiked 28% after funding cuts ended support for over 1,000 shelter beds. Officials said high housing costs and a record number of evictions are pushing more people into homelessness (adding to the growing crisis).  KJZZ
