  • Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery will host its 25th annual Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 26 in Mesa—over 1,000 community members will honor veterans with patriotic music, speeches and a wreath-laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  Mesa Independent

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Police said 64-year-old Daryl Reinertson died when he fell into equipment at a waste tire collection facility (11400 E. Pecos Road) on Tuesday.  Mesa Independent

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Apex Power Conversion held a ribbon cutting for its new U.S. headquarters and factory in Mesa today, where the facility will initially employ 300 workers and plans to grow to 700 by 2029. The 206,000-square-foot site (part of a $60 million investment) will begin making full power conversion units in the first quarter of next year.  Mesa Now

  • The Mesa Police Department reported three robberies of individuals during May 1-7; one incident was at an ATM away from a bank on May 1 at 10:50 a.m. in the 2800 block.  Mesa Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A conversation with Tempe’s urban forester and ASU’s Shade Lab Director explained how trees and engineered shade can cool the valley and protect our health. They detailed urban design challenges that limit tree planting and noted that alternatives—such as shade sails and building facades—can offer effective relief during hot summers.  KJZZ
  • Swiss-based H55's fully electric Bristell B23 Energic aircraft arrived at Falcon Field Airport on May 18 to showcase sustainable aviation technology and was on display May 20 and 21. Avflight, the airport's fixed-base operator, will present the aircraft again on May 24 as part of Mesa's Climate Action Plan.  Mesa Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Valley Metro will open a major light rail extension on June 7 that adds 5.5 miles of track, eight new stations, and a two-line system linking the A Line with the new B Line (with transfers at the Downtown Hub near Central Avenue and Washington Street). The $1.35 billion project is expected to bring 8,000 more daily riders (especially many south Phoenix residents with limited car access) and includes upgraded streets with new bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and improved underground utilities.  12 News
