- ➤ Funeral arrangements for Firefighter Mark Keller of the Mesa Fire and Medical Department have been finalized after he was found dead on duty May 6. Viewing took place Wednesday, May 14 at Bunker Family Funeral Home Garden Chapel—33 N. Centennial Way, and his procession at 8:15 a.m. and funeral service at 10 a.m. take place today at Mission Community Church—4450 E. Elliot Road in Gilbert. Mesa Independent
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ United Sound, a Mesa music education program for special education students, received a $12,500 grant from Arizona Financial Credit Union through its local causes program on May 14th—funding that will help expand its music classes. Mesa Independent
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arizona construction workers can now start earlier this summer to reduce heat-related illness, with shifts allowed to begin at (5 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on Saturdays) from May 1 to Oct. 15. Gov. Katie Hobbs signed the law Tuesday, and it went into effect immediately statewide. KJZZ
- ➤ Military leaders and congressional officials stressed that the Apache attack helicopter built in Mesa remains essential for future combat despite the rise of drone warfare. The Army is modernizing the AH-64E model with improved radar, range and manned-unmanned teaming capabilities—Congress must approve funding to keep the production line open. Mesa Independent
- ➤ The Downtown Mesa Association shared plans to boost downtown with better parking, a new mobile information kiosk, and more free family events. Its May 8 presentation outlined a $1.04 million contract for cleanup, event production, and maintenance ahead of a city council vote on May 19 (which includes a $50,000 special event parking fund). - ➤ A new law in Arizona changes the missing persons alert system to cover everyone with cognitive disabilities and renames it the Seek and Find Alert System—covering all ages and requiring law enforcement to act without delay. - ➤ Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill on May 7 that makes it a state crime to set up encampments at state universities, and school administrators must order those involved to leave immediately or face arrest for trespassing. East Valley Tribune
