  • Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery in Mesa will hold its 26th annual Memorial Day celebration on Monday, May 25 at 8 a.m. The free community event will feature military honors and patriotic music (including a spiritual reflection by Sir Knight Rev. Robert King Sr.).  Mesa Independent

  • Design and landscaping plans for a 7,975 sqft expansion of the Little Dealer Little Prices facility were reviewed yesterday at Mesa Design Review Board meeting at 4:30 p.m. in the lower council chambers at 57 E. First St. The project will develop a 5.8-acre parcel and include 61 parking spaces.  Mesa Independent
  • Waymo recalled 3,791 robotaxis after federal regulators found a software flaw allowed self-driving vehicles to enter floodwater; the company had already installed an interim update and tighter weather restrictions by April 20. Mesa residents using shared rides may notice changes as the firm works on a permanent fix.  12 News

  • Phoenix Magazine food critic Nikki Buchanan is retiring after 42 years, ending over 3,000 restaurant reviews in the Valley. Her retirement marks the close of an era as new food influencers prepare to offer fresh perspectives on local dining.  KJZZ
  • The Arizona Commission on the Arts released its five-year strategic plan on May 12 to strengthen local arts connections and improve access for underserved communities amid potential state funding cuts — the plan is based on consultations with hundreds of local artists and community members.  KJZZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mesa Gateway Airport is planning major changes this coming year as airline operations give way to new hotels and aerospace companies, officials said during the Queen Creek Town Council meeting on May 6 (J. Brian O’Neill provided the update).  Mesa Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona State University partners with TSMC to launch a free technician training program addressing the chipmaker’s plan to hire over 100 techs by year’s end and expand north Phoenix operations (including new fabrication facilities and housing).  KJZZ
  • Arizona’s Auditor General report found weak controls and questionable spending in the Empowerment Scholarship Account program used by Mesa families for education expenses. The report highlights over 2.3 million automated transactions and conflicts of interest with officials, and state lawmakers are calling for further investigation in the coming weeks.  12 News
  • Mesa high school students recently completed a free civic leadership program by Phoenix-based Read Better Be Better+ they researched community challenges and presented solutions to a mock board that included former councilwoman Julie Spilsbury+ the projects tackled issues like transportation barriers and classroom technology reliance.  The Mesa Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mesa's Human Services Department and community partners have opened a day respite center at Christ Church located at 655 E. University Drive plus set up several cooling centers and hydration stations to help residents beat extreme heat. The respite center is open Monday-Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Mesa Now
