CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday morning, Mesa police responded to reports of a body at Mesa Drive and Broadway Road and found a man dead in an alley—detectives are investigating the case as a homicide.  ABC15 Arizona
  • Mesa Police confirmed a homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead near Broadway Road & Mesa Drive in an alley; his identity remains undisclosed while detectives gather more evidence.  12 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA Arizona forecasts nearly one million Arizonans will hit the road for Memorial Day weekend (rising plane ticket prices are pushing about 9 in 10 holiday travelers to drive) and travel numbers are expected to reach some of the highest levels in decades.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After Real ID became required on May 7 for boarding flights and entering government buildings, some Arizonans are hurrying to get one—experts warn scammers may offer quick fixes and urge anyone suspecting fraud to report it to the Attorney General's Office.  KJZZ
  • A contract with the federal government allows Avelo Airlines to conduct deportation flights from Mesa Gateway Airport today, though it is unclear if flights will start immediately. The agreement, made in April, will use three Boeing 737-800 planes to support DHS’s Immigration Control and Enforcement program (a long-term charter effort).  ABC15 Arizona
  • Mesa's Office of Economic Development has named three new staff members — Amanda Elliot as Deputy Director of Small Business Services, Benjamin Snow as Deputy Director of Business Development, and Hayley Freestone as Economic Development Specialist — to boost local economic growth.   • The Arizona Supreme Court is reviewing arguments from groups claiming that a voter-approved law requiring donor disclosure violates free speech rights—attorneys for the challengers insist the law breaches privacy protections, even though lower courts upheld it.   • The Arizona Corporation Commission will review APS’s process after disconnecting power for an 82-year-old customer last May, a lapse that may have contributed to her death from heat stress on a hot day.
