ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A new AAA study found that extreme heat in Arizona reduces fuel efficiency for electric and hybrid vehicles, with hybrids losing about 12% fuel economy and electric models losing 10% range when temperatures exceed 95 degrees. Mesa drivers are advised to plan extra charging stops & drive during cooler times. KJZZ
- ➤ APS data shows that Mesa area residential customers used 5.5% less electricity since 2022 yet saw a 23% increase in costs per kWh, while businesses increased their usage by 18% in the same period. APS asserts that the rate changes reflect multi-year adjustments and that data centers cover their own expenses. 12 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Alta Mesa Golf Club, general manager Scott Mattiello said the club is balancing water conservation with green fairways using advanced irrigation and handwatering (a century-old method) amid an ongoing water crisis. The club saved 15–20% water with a new Bermuda grass blend and may face reduced allotments soon. ABC15 Arizona
- ➤ The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning effective today through tonight as valley temperatures are expected to hit 107°F (14°F above normal), with research linking the surge to human-caused carbon pollution. KJZZ
- ➤ Rising temperatures prompt the Arizona Department of Transportation to urge drivers today to secure trailer chains, check tire pressure, and avoid parking on dry grass (wildfires are mostly started by humans) as sparks have set off fires around the valley and travel safety kits are recommended. 12 News

- ➤ Mesa council delayed approval for a 124-room extended-stay hotel and retail/restaurant project in northeast Mesa until June 1 so the developer can upgrade the design to meet upscale expectations — the proposal is part of the Longbow Business Park development near Longbow Parkway and Recker Road. - ➤ Arizona, California and Nevada have proposed cutting more than 3.2 million acre-feet of Colorado River water through 2028 to ease shortages. The plan awaits federal approval and may affect local CAP users (Central Arizona Project) as state water managers assess its impact. KJZZ
