CRIME NEWS

  • Antolino Ballejos Jr., 25, surrendered near midnight on May 3 at Silver Creek Apartments—he is now booked on a second-degree murder charge for the shooting death of Tyler Davis, who died after being shot during a 7 p.m. call on April 9.  Mesa Independent
  • Three Mesa park rangers have been accused of misconduct including aggressive treatment of transients and mishandling a stolen gun—one ranger was arrested on April 22 which triggered an internal probe. Mesa has placed several rangers on leave and turned unit command over to Mesa Police while an external investigation continues.  The Mesa Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dysart Unified School District announced it will cut bus routes for several hundred students next school year to save about $500,000 annually due to a $60 million shortfall. The board also approved a $127 million bond measure for the November ballot — a move that does not include a tax increase — as part of its effort to address the funding gap.  12 News

  • Rachel Caballero from TruWest Credit Union in Mesa advises Arizonans to build lasting wealth by first securing an emergency fund, carefully researching investment options, and using laddering techniques for CDs — all to ensure that money is safely grown through trusted financial services.  Mesa Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Katie Hobbs vetoed a proposal from Mesa Sen. David Farnsworth that would have cut state funds from universities and community colleges offering DEI courses — she said the change could weaken workforce stability and harm the economy. This veto adds to her record of shutting down 75 proposals this legislative session — reinforcing support for higher education funding.  Mesa Independent

  • A four-lot industrial subdivision is planned on a 10 acre site west of the southwest corner of North Recker Road and East Longbow Parkway following a unanimous 4—0 vote by the Mesa Planning and Zoning Board on April 23—paving the way for new industrial space in Mesa.  Mesa Independent
