BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avelo Airlines signed a deal to fly ICE deportation flights from its Mesa hub and its three planes will begin operating on May 12—a move aimed at keeping over 1,100 crewmembers employed. The decision has triggered protests and criticism in Connecticut where local politicians and activists condemn the change.  KJZZ

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal authorities announced that 35-year-old Ian Moses, seen on Tesla security videos using starter logs and gasoline to set fire to a dealership in Mesa, was arrested and will face federal charges — police found a red gas can in his van.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa educator Dawn Silva—third-grade enrichment teacher at Las Sendas Elementary School—was surprised this morning by students, parents, school staff and family in her classroom as she began her final year before retirement.  12 News
  • On April 30, the Arizona Department of Education released a list of districts that met and did not meet new federal DEI guidance after federal judges ruled against funding cuts for schools with diversity programs—Phoenix Union and Tolleson Union High School Districts argued that vague terms and pending court challenges made signing risky, and ADE said the list would remain informational pending further court outcomes.  KJZZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wild horses on the Salt River face potential removals as the Arizona Department of Agriculture’s new request for proposal directs the Forest Service to reduce the herd to 100—despite ARS 3-1491 passed to protect them. The management contract bidding closes May 15 and if awarded, future actions could sharply lower the population maintained through birth control and natural attrition.  Mesa Independent

  • Members of the Mesa Police Department updated the Mesa City Council on its budget during an April 10 study session—detailing increases in some areas and reductions in others. The changes will guide the department’s future planning.  Mesa Independent

  • Arizona health officials reported nearly 11,000 cases of Valley fever in 2023—new research suggests dogs may help scientists get a clearer picture of the disease’s true prevalence.  KJZZ
