ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local drivers in Mesa may face record gas prices as experts warn that an extended conflict in Iran could push costs further upward — AAA Arizona estimates a gallon now averages $4.57 and prices could rise if market pressures persist.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ASU Prep students in Mesa spoke with NASA astronaut Chris Wilson on the ISS during a live radio call at 9:52 a.m. today; they asked about how sleep and plant growth work in space (Wilson explained that crew sleep in bags and are growing alfalfa aboard).  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A virtual community meeting on a long-running racial profiling case ended one hour early Wednesday night, and Sheriff Jerry Sheridan declined to discuss the cost audit (the compliance cost was not on the agenda).  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Public Citizen report warns that eight Arizona hospitals, including Mesa's Arizona General Hospital and Four Peaks Medical Center, risk service cuts or closure if federal Medicaid funding reductions move forward; HonorHealth is developing a plan to address the impact.  12 News
  • Arizona now offers a program where family caregivers get paid to care for elderly and disabled relatives & provide needed home care. The new option helps locals receive consistent support from their loved ones.  Mesa Independent

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Mesa City Council approved on April 20 a rezoning for a two-building lodging campus near the Cubs spring training facility on Rio Salado (housing MLB players and a select-service hotel). Mayor Mark Freeman and Councilmember Dorean Taylor supported the plan.  ABC15 Arizona
