GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Mesa City Council will vote on a rezoning proposal at its upcoming meeting to allow a new single-residence property development located about 1,100 feet south of the southeast area — the decision will determine if the project moves forward. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is considering wearable technology in its jails to track high-risk inmates and help prevent overdose deaths. MCSO officials will begin a county procurement process with requests for proposals — the decision on device vendors is still pending. KJZZ
- ➤ Last year, Mesa Fire and Medical Department responded to 72,135 calls and is now proposing a $162 million budget—about 6.7% higher than before—to keep fire trucks and ambulances running in the fiscal year starting in July. The department will boost ambulance funding to $22.5 million, expand cancer screening for workforce wellness, and cut expenses by $3 million over three years through staffing adjustments and other measures. - ➤ Arizona police agencies are hiring more recruits thanks to a relaxed rule that cuts the required marijuana-free period to six months—agencies have been using petitions to hire individuals for about a year and expect additional hires when the rule officially takes effect in September. The board director said the change has expanded the pool of qualified applicants. KJZZ
