  • Friends for Life, a Gilbert no-kill shelter, has announced its annual golf fundraiser All—fore the Animals on April 26 at Superstition Springs Golf Club in Mesa with Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers as the presenting sponsor. Check-in will run from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. and the tournament will start at 7:30 a.m., with all proceeds benefiting shelter operations.  Mesa Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Philanthropist Mackenzie Scott donated over half a million dollars to Reach Out and Read, and Arizona’s affiliate will receive $50,000 to launch a monthly donor program that helps clinics give books to kids during wellness checks—Dr. Gretchen Hull said 160 clinics will benefit from this effort to boost early literacy.  KJZZ
  • Banner Health said more people were using AI tools like ChatGPT (instead of calling the poison control hotline) to check if they were poisoned; the hotline saw fewer calls but more serious cases (director Maureen Roland urged anyone with an emergency to call for help).  KJZZ

  • Mesa celebrated a successful spring training season with over 300,000 fans attending games. The Chicago Cubs—who led MLB attendance for 12 straight seasons—set a record with 16,161 fans at Sloan Park on March 8 while the Athletics saw an 11 percent increase.  Mesa Now
