Volunteers at First United Methodist Church in downtown Mesa have completed 18,000 handmade bedrolls for groups like the Salvation Army, marking over 35 years of work.

They meet Thursdays (8:30 a.m. to noon) at the Outreach Center on 15 E. First Ave.

At the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, a family shares its personal tie to Operation Halyard (a WWII mission that rescued over 500 airmen with help from Serbian civilians) ahead of a weekend event honoring the historic rescue.

Mesa earned two environmental excellence awards at Arizona Forward’s 44th annual gala.
