BUSINESS NEWS

  • Garmin has acquired a hangar and office complex at Mesa Gateway Airport to expand its aircraft certification and flight test operations. The facility includes two adjacent hangars (75,000 sqft) and office space for about 75 associates.  Mesa Independent

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arizona Baseball Museum opened in Mesa on Feb. 21 to share over a century of baseball history with memorabilia from early local teams and interactive exhibits. Housed in a renovated 1936 building (once used as a bomb shelter), the venue connects visitors to the sport's local legacy.  Mesa Independent
  • Local poet and author Logan Phillips, who grew up visiting Changing Hands, will return there to read his book 'Reckon' and discuss it with Mary Stephens on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. in Tempe; his work reflects his southern Arizona heritage and family history.  12 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mesa Public Schools began issuing pink slips as enrollment declines, with a board meeting set for Feb. 26 (staff were first notified on Feb. 12) to finalize which positions will be cut for next school year.  The Mesa Tribune
  • Tawn Hauptli, a Mesa Community College education and reading studies teacher, has received the 2025-26 National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs Full-Time Faculty Award. She accepted the honor on Feb. 19 in New Orleans—a recognition of her commitment to preparing future educators.  Mesa Independent
  • Early bird registration is now available for Girls Mentorship’s Pursue More Summer Camp, a week-long day camp in Mesa that builds confidence and leadership skills for girls ages 10-13. The camp will be held this summer with details to be announced.  Mesa Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, hydrologists from Salt River Project measured a 10-inch snowpack (holding about 2 inches of water) in pine forests between Flagstaff and Payson. The measurement guides water managers in planning releases and holds for reservoirs that serve nearly 2.5 million people.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sky Harbor is delaying or canceling some flights today because a strong winter storm and rising violence in Mexico are affecting travel. Passengers heading to Boston, Washington D.C., or Mexico should check their flight status — while other local airports like Mesa Gateway remain largely unaffected.  12 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The U.S. CDC reports nearly 1,000 measles cases in 2026 so far and urges vaccination as rates fall, with experts noting a decline in kindergarten immunizations (Arizona had 221 cases in 2025). Mesa residents should review their vaccination records to keep the community safe.  12 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Troy Young, a former ASU athletic trainer, sat in his Mesa yard on Feb. 19 reflecting on his role with Team USA during the 1988 Seoul Olympics and on how the team’s bronze finish marked a shift from amateur to professional play (he recalled a change was coming).  Mesa Independent
  • Team USA men's hockey shows strong local ties as captain Auston Matthews is connected to the Valley and head coach Mike Sullivan played for the Coyotes — a reflection of the area's influence on the team.  12 News
