- ➤ Hundreds from across the East Valley gathered in downtown Mesa on Jan. 19 to honor MLK Day with a half-mile parade & a festival at City Center Plaza that featured food booths, live music, and service awards. The Arizona Republic

- ➤ KoMiCo opened its new high-tech facility for cleaning, coating and repairing semiconductor parts at 7300 E. Hampton Ave in Mesa. Local leaders including Mayor Mark Freeman joined the event as the facility created 50 jobs with plans to add over 200 more soon. Mesa Independent
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Hobbs named Laura Tohe as the state's second poet laureate last week, and she recited her work at the Capitol during Indian Nations and Tribes Legislative Day. Tohe plans to bring her poetry to rural communities during her two-year term. KJZZ

- ➤ Mesa Public Library’s Mesa Reads initiative logged over 15 million minutes of reading in 2025 — engaging 5,468 residents and 43 school classrooms using the Beanstack app. The program built community literacy through daily challenges. Mesa Now

- ➤ The Gilbert Fire Department added Xanadu, a 3-year-old lab trained as Arizona's only ATF accelerant dog, to help investigate suspicious fires; the dog, who replaced retired Zeta, already responded to about a dozen calls and trains twice a day to sharpen her skills. 12 News
