- ➤ The city of Mesa will celebrate MLK Day with a parade on Jan. 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Plaza at Mesa City Center at 56 E. Main St. The route runs down Center Street — a festival will follow at the plaza. Mesa Independent
- ➤ Mesa joins Chandler, Gilbert, Phoenix, Guadalupe and Tempe for the Annual Regional Unity Walk on Jan. 24. The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Tempe Beach Park on 80 W. Rio Salado Parkway and wraps up at 7 p.m.—a 1-mile candlelight walk starts at 6 p.m. with free T-shirts for early arrivals. Mesa Independent

BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Peter Quach, founder of Mekong Plaza, built Mesa’s Asian District from a repurposed Target store and turned tough times into success. In late November, city leaders celebrated a $10-million expansion with 12 new businesses while Quach plans a 56-unit apartment complex (plus redeveloped strip malls) to boost local growth.
